There is nothing to it but to do it. That is the main takeaway I gathered from The Defining Decade by Meg Jay, PhD.
Jay authored two versions of The Defining Decade based on years of research and clinical notes from her patients. The second edition was adapted after the Covid-19 pandemic. She speaks directly to twentysomethings based on her most profound understandings of human behavior during this formative decade. Whether you read the self-help book or listen to the audiobook like I did, your future self will thank your twentysomething self for learning how to use Now to prepare for Then.
Many twentysomethings wrongly believe that the day they turn 30 is the day their life falls into place. On the contrary, life will not happen for you if you don’t open your eyes to the life that is already happening around you. Start piecing together aspirations for your dream life. Consider your finances, relationships, career, housing, etc. Do these facets of daily life align with your aspirations? If not, now is the time to course-correct and find your way towards a productive lifestyle. Now is the time to create good habits as a means to the end you desire.
Your twenties truly are the last of your formative years. Make. Them. Count.
