Rule #1: Stay in your lane
Rule #2: Be quiet
Rule #3: Wait for opportunities to come to you
Rule #4: Stick to what & who you know
Rule #5: Do what is expected of you
The list of rules to become the "perfect woman" is endless. In reality, the only rule to become a successful woman is, well, break the rules. New York Women in Communications (NYWICI) hosted its 54th annual Matrix Awards on May 21st 2024 to honor the incredible rule-breaking women who lead the communications industry. Here's a glimpse into their fierce insights:
“If you are worth more, say it. And more importantly, go find it.” - Ally Love. CEO and Founder, Love Squad
“Start by starting. The answer to ‘How’ is ‘Yes!’” - Jill Cress. Chief Marketing and Experience Officer, H&R Block
“Know when to pivot. Be nimble and move fast.” - Nina Garcia. Editor-in-Chief, ELLE, Hearst Magazines
“If it is deeply personal to them, then it damn well better be personal to me. And it is.” - Jennifer Lowney. Global Head of Communications, Citi
“Follow the truth wherever it leads.” - Meredith Kopit Levien. President and Chief Executive Officer, The New York Times Company
“Don’t tell me what I can’t do. Let me show you what I can do.” - Kristin Chenoweth. EMMY and TONY Award-Winning Actress and Singer
“The rules were not written for women like me, so I created my own.” - Rakia Reynolds. Founder and Executive Officer, Skai Blue Media
“No matter what technology comes, there will Always Always Always be time for a great idea” - Nancy Reyes. Chief Executive Officer of the Americas, BBDO
Perhaps most inspiring of all was Laura Brusca, President of NYWICI and Chief Communications Officer of Forbes, reflecting on her first Matrix where she sat in the last row, corner table. I just so happened to sit at that very same table last night and felt an immense sense of hope that I could someday follow in her footsteps and make a name for myself in the industry.
Until next year, NYWICI.
